Is This Thing On?

Hey. It’s me. Robert.

How are you?

So this is one of those dumb blog posts where the writer is like “Hey, sorry for not posting in X weeks. But I’m back and going to do better this time.”

Then all the readers are like “Who cares, dude? I forgot you even existed.” Unsubscribe.

So, yeah, I’m doing that right now, except it’s been like months, not weeks. But, even though I’m that blogger guy right now, I’d like to think I’ve built up a little trust with those of you who read 101 Books for a long time. I mean we’ve made it through 1,200 mildly incoherent posts over the better part of 6 years here!

The fact is that, several months ago, I just flat out burned out. Even after cutting back my posting schedule to three days a week, I couldn’t stay motivated. The difficult part of this blog is that I’m not just writing a blog, like most bloggers. I’m reading a crapload of books on top of writing a crapton of blog posts.

But I can’t let this die. I’m so close to the end. With only 13 books to go, I’m so close to reaching the finish line. I never intended to take a long break on this project, but I did. And I honestly feel more refreshed and ready to tackle this project down the homestretch.

In the end, my hiatus might have been for the best. Instead of powering through, hating the books and dreading writing a blog post every day, I’ve had a much needed break.

I’m not going to commit to a schedule, but I plan on posting 2-3 days a week for now.

So if you’re reading this right now. Thanks for hanging around even after I disappeared off the blog unexpectedly for months. I really appreciate you guys.

I plan on taking a look at the remaining 13 books in my next post. Let’s finish this thing!

  5. Well done for taking the time to look after yourself. A break is def. needed from time to time. Look forward to your posts. Have you considered only doing once a week? It would prob. Satisfy most of your audience.

    • Yeah, I’m thinking two. If only did one a week that would mostly be reviews and previews and those bore me. 🙂

  6. Welcome back, Robert. I see you’re in Nashville, which gets my antennae up because I grew up in Memphis. Posting 3 times a week seems like a lot to me, and I’m inclined to agree with a once a week post, as the commentator above suggests. But either way, I’m glad you’re here, and while I’ve got you, my friend, Bren McClain, will be doing a book signing at Parnassus Book’s in Nashville this Tuesday at 6:00. If you go, give her a hug for me. Her novel “One Good Mama Bone” ( Story River Books; Pat Conroy’s labor of love) was just released and seems to be doing well. I posted a review of it my WordPress site!

  12. Glad to see you back , Robert! And like some of the others, I’d advocate cutting back to keep from getting burned out. I only do two regular posts a week, and that wipes me out sometimes. 😉

I’m very late to the game (your book reading agenda) but I have much enjoyed your honest reviews along with all the comments. 88 down, 13 to go. Piece of cake. PS: You should enjoy the reading, it shouldn’t be a burden. Hang in there.

  23. Let’s focus on the positive things: you’re back
And it’s rather normal that one needs a break during such a long term voluntarily project. No apologies expacted.

  25. It’s okay to press the “pause” button on a blog. I’ve done it due to illness and since my readers are fairly loyal ones (how very small the number of subscribers is), they understand. I always look forward to reading what you write, even when I don’t agree with your opinions. Our individual observations are always welcome here and I enjoy reading the comment thread.
    Have at it (whenever). Cheers!

I was wondering? But, I thought your hiatus might give me a chance to finish my 100 novels ahead of you…but now probably not (24 to go), and I’m plodding through Les Mis right now…and have Proust coming up. But in spite of probably falling farther behind…I’m glad to read you’re alive and well. http://100greatestnovelsofalltimequest.blogspot.com

  38. OMG YOU’RE BACK

Seriously man, so excited you’re back. Even though I disagree with, like, half of your opinions on books, I’ve loved this blog nonetheless for more time than I can count. I’m kind of doing a similar thing to you on my own blog, (except I’ve combined the Time 100 list with the Modern Library 100 list, as well as Robert Dimery’s 1001 Albums You Need to Hear Before You Die) and you’re seriously my biggest inspiration as a blog writer. So I’m glad you’re back in buisness, and I hope you enjoy the rest of the list!

P.S.: I know, Gravity’s Rainbow can be pretty intimidating, and you still have that one to read. But I’ve read it myself, and it really isn’t that bad. It’s really just a lot of information to take in, and as long as you keep track of things, it’s actually an incredible book. Then again, I loved Naked Lunch, so maybe don’t listen to my opinions on the matter.
