James Joyce Was A Copyeditor’s Nightmare

Take a look at this. Holy crap!

I’m not sure if this was a copyeditor having a nightmare with Joyce’s original draft, or if it was Joyce editing a later draft. Either way, let’s all thank God for track changes in Word.

I can’t imagine working like this. Might as well be reading Greek.

  1. Haha this is why I love Joyce and I love his work. Ulysses is one of the funniest yet heart wrenching epics I’ve ever read!

  2. This seems like me, everytime before posting anything. I believe that anyone has to revisit his thoughts and writings when we talk about prose, instead, poetry could be written without too much worries, just a confused swirl of emotions.
Said that, Joyce is brilliant and after watching this, I know why.

  8. Ha ha! Having read Ulysses, it’s probably safe to say Joyce was indeed a copy editor’s nightmare.

Well it does look like one big paragraph, maybe there’s a lot of run on sentences in there too.

  11. Should have followed Hemingway’s advice, Write drunk, Edit sober. Instead he did the opposite.

  12. Totally agree. Not being his editor, this one had me in stiches!
Preparing Joyce’s manuscripts for print must have been one of the worst jobs at the time. Does anyone have the names of his editing victims? Any idea how often a manuscript would go back and forth before it was finally printed?
