Let’s Talk Game of Thrones

Okay, guys, I’ve got a new obsession.

A few months ago, after realizing I had access to HBO GO on my iPad, I rolled through 4 seasons of Game of Thrones in about a month. Last night, as some of you may know, the third episode of season 5 aired, and it was pretty amazing.

In the past, I’ve been skeptical of the show (having never read the books), and my buddy Brandon even guest posted here also poking at the originality of the GOT series. But, having watched the show now, I’m a huge fan.

I think we can all agree that Tyrion is just the best character that ever existed, right? And Khaleesi and Marjorie Tyrell are pretty easy on the eyes, yes?

I’d love to dig into plot and all that, but I don’t want to post any spoilers. I just want to say that I’m in love with this show, and I’d highly recommend it if you have access to HBO content.

So who’s as obsessed with Game of Thrones as I am?

  4. A huge fan of the books, so I a a little disappointed this season. Was warned that creative rights were given and have found that to be very true. I am trying to decide what to do next.

    • I’ve heard they combined a couple of books, right?

They had to, as books 4 & 5 – and apparently, parts of the unpublished book 6 – happened simultaneously. This is the first season that major plot lines have varied from the books so I’m a little disconcerted as well.

Regardless, you need to read the books as soon as your reading schedule opens up. The show is a great adaptation, but it is still like a stone skipping over the surface compared to everything going on in the novels.

  6. Glad you have finally joined us all. But you know what I am going to say, right? The show is good and all, but the books are terrific (definitely the first three, and the second half of the fifth book are fabulous). You should give them a shot.

  8. I wasn’t able to get into the show. For some reason the show seemed to move at a glacial pace, whereas the books flew by for me. I might try again in the future, but I will probably wait until the series is done as I know this is the season where things start to “seriously” (I read this somewhere so take it for what it’s worth) turn away from the books, which they’ve done already in minor details.

Lol welcome to the family Robert. I read the books about two years ago, but only began actively following the series this current season. Tyrion is always the badass and the Khaleesi, well, I am curious about her Dragons and what Kingslanding will be like when she returns.
There’s so much to love about this, and topping the list is that even with reading the books, it doesn’t take away from the intrigue of watching the series.

  11. I loved the books so much. I remember thinking that the third book was the end. Then, when I got a couple of hundred pages in, I realized that Martin couldn’t possibly tie up all of his plot arcs in another three hundred pages. I had to wait two years– two!– to read the fourth book.
I agree that Tyrion Lannister is a character for the ages, but in the book I thought Arya Stark was also one of the most interesting characters I’d ever read. I don’t know if her role is that important in the TV series. I watched the first season, but haven’t watched the rest.

  12. I’m not obsessed with the show, but I want to see the mother of dragons take the iron throne instead of the stupid kid. John snow is the boring part of the series because i can’t find the night watch ragamuffins interesting.

  19. Well, I can brag that I am a huge fan even before it went sooooo mainstream, back when when it was still on its second season. I’ve finished reading all the books before watching the TV series and i would say they hit it! And some say I am too young for such violent and sex themed shows since I was fifteen when I started liking it but … it teaches me a lot of things, a lot of adult things. Of course, I am talking about women’s rights and such things.

Absolutely loved the books! What I have seen of the show seemed pretty good but I only got to watch single episodes on airplanes since I don’t have cable at home. A coworker had recommended the books around 2007, but I did not get into them until 2011 (and certainly regretted having waited so long!). I readthe first 4 in a few months, then waited impatiently for no. 5 to come out. Still waiting for no. 6!

Loved the books! Watched the first 2 seasons and loved them too. I really need to catch up with the show, though I hear they deviate from the books in the later series’
And yes, Tyrion Lannister is the best character in the books and played to perfection by Peter Dinklage. I’m completely in love with him, to be perfectly honest. Arya Stark is another favourite as well. She’s such a complex, strong and fascinating character and she gets even better in the later books.

  23. Love the show, love the book! I don’t know which is better, but the books have something more… fascinating, in my opinion. I got stuck with GOT recently along with my family, and we are eager to watch it in our language, because reading the fan-made subtitles is really a pain >.<

  24. Khaleesi and Marjory Tyrell are easy on the eyes – is that all the credit you could give to a major character and important supporting character?
Most of the women in this story are stuck in patriarchical structures and yet GRRM shows us their agency and the way they express themselves and make things happen, overtly or covertly.
As much as I love the series I’m firmly in the Book camp – there’s so much more depth and detail that just cannot be translated to the screen, so I too would urge you to delve into the books when you can.

    • Good points. I love Khaleesi’s character. Love seeing her growth from the timid little sister in the first episode to what she has turned into in season 5, though it seems like it might start crumbling down soon.

  26. As a father of 2 small boys (3 years and 3 months) I literally could not watch the Shireen burning scene. I fast forwarded through that part. I thought the arena scene was pretty well done and overall I’d rate the episode 4/5. I am excited to see where D&D go with the season finale.
