64 Classic Books Battle It Out Bracket-Style

Every March, I think about making up a great books bracket, matching up 64 of the best novels ever head to head, a la March Madness style. But I’ve never done it.

This year, Book Pal beat me to it.

They created a bracket featuring an outstanding list of 64 novels broken down into four regions: The Dickens Region (pre-1900s lit), The Hemingway Region (post-1900s lit), the Seuss Region (kids’ classics), and the Rowling Region (YA).

Most of the tournament’s first round is complete with some notable upsets:

  • The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has no place beating 1984, but it did.
  • Fahrenheit 451 surprisingly took out The Sound and the Fury. I’m good with that.
  • Where the Red Fern Grows defeated The Hobbit. Dumb.
  • Divergent defeated The Catcher in the Rye. Wait…what? Why is Divergent even in this tournament? And how in the name of all that is good in literature is it voted better than The Catcher in the Rye. And I’m not even a huge Salinger fan.

The second round begins soon. You can vote on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter using the hashtag #bookmadness.

Head over to Book Madness to see the updated bracket with the first round nearly complete.

I am crying/laughing- divergent.. a classic? That’s like saying Animal Farm is obsolete. Classics and passing fads(divergent) are two completely different categories.

  9. So cool!!! What do we get if we finish the bracket correctly? I know I heard on ESPN that for the March Madness bracket you have a 1 in 3 trillion chance.

  12. This is awesome, but how in God’s name (or anyone’s name!) did Divergent !) make this list (and I enjoyed the book) and also BEAT Catcher? Unacceptable. Also, the Hobbit losing is not okay.

As I understood it Divergent is in the YA region, not classic anything. No reason for people to be getting snippy.

Besides which I’d vote Divergent in that matchup all day long. Catcher in the Rye is trash.

  16. Ugh, youths! This is why we can’t have nice things! haha

But seriously, anyone who picks Oz over 1984 or Divergent over Catcher deserves their library card revoked.
