Harper Lee To Publish A Second Novel

Hold me. That’s all I can say. I’m absolutely giddy about this.

Here’s a quick summary from the Associated Press:

“To Kill a Mockingbird” will not be Harper Lee’s only published book after all.

Publisher Harper announced Tuesday that “Go Set a Watchman,” a novel the Pulitzer Prize-winning author completed in the 1950s and put aside, will be released July 14. Rediscovered last fall, “Go Set a Watchman” is essentially a sequel to “To Kill a Mockingbird,” although it was finished earlier. The 304-page book will be Lee’s second, and the first new work in more than 50 years.

The publisher plans a first printing of 2 million copies.

“In the mid-1950s, I completed a novel called `Go Set a Watchman,'” the 88-year-old Lee said in a statement issued by Harper. “It features the character known as Scout as an adult woman, and I thought it a pretty decent effort. My editor, who was taken by the flashbacks to Scout’s childhood, persuaded me to write a novel (what became `To Kill a Mockingbird’) from the point of view of the young Scout.

I was a first-time writer, so I did as I was told. I hadn’t realized it (the original book) had survived, so was surprised and delighted when my dear friend and lawyer Tonja Carter discovered it. After much thought and hesitation, I shared it with a handful of people I trust and was pleased to hear that they considered it worthy of publication. I am humbled and amazed that this will now be published after all these years.”

Of note: Today is not April 1.

  4. I’m not sure how to process. It’s like an alternative universe. It was never my favorite novel, but it is a great novel. Finding out that it was written after the unreleased novel is mind-shattering.

    • I read in a news story that this book does feature Atticus. It’s about a grown-up Scout going back to Maycomb to visit him. πŸ˜„ Atticus is my favorite character from TKM too (and actually, my favorite character from any book), so I was excited to hear about that.

    Golly golly gosh!
TKAMB had such a huge impact on me (still has) and in a weird way I feel like part of the reason it was so special was because it was her only book. And now I’m so glad it isn’t…
But when I saw this post I literally had to sit down and take a breath; so much respect and admiration for Harper Lee!!!

I will probably (I mean, definitely!) do a review of this once it comes out and I have read it, re-read it and analysed it a trillion times…

  20. For everyone celebrating, I’d suggest a bit more skepticism. This news comes only a few months after Lee’s sister and lawyer passed away, and it’s common knowledge that Lee is not in an ideal mental state. I don’t like being a buzzkill, but as much as I love TKAM, I fear that this intensely private woman may be taken advantage of.

    Just food for thought: http://jezebel.com/be-suspicious-of-the-new-harper-lee-novel-1683488258

I’m going to have to read To Kill a Mockingbird again before July, but that’s okay I was planning on it any way. I’ll be with the rest of you, impatiently waiting.
