What’s Your Favorite Christmas Movie?

With today’s Monday Question, let’s take the focus off books and talk about movies.

So what’s your favorite Christmas movie?

So many to choose from, right?

You’ve got Elf, A Christmas Story, Miracle on 54th Street, White Christmas, It’s A Wonderful Life, Christmas Vacation, and hundreds of others.

My family watches two Christmas movies together every December: Elf and It’s A Wonderful Life. Elf is our comic relief (“You’re not Santa. You smell like beer and cheese.”), and It’s A Wonderful Life is our classic Christmas selection. My wife tears up during that final scene EVERY time.

I just absolutely love It’s A Wonderful Life. I’ve probably seen the movie 20 times now, but I enjoy it as much every time I sit down to watch. “Merry Christmas you old Savings and Loan!”

George Bailey and Buddy the Elf are my two favorites.

So what about you: What’s your favorite Christmas movie?

Mine is home alone, because it reminds me of people learning and remembering that family is what Christmas is all about, and that sometimes we dont know and appreciate what we have till it’s gone.

  5. White Christmas is my second favorite movie of all time, not even just of Christmas movies, so I’ll have to go with that. I adore Danny Kaye in that. It has both serious and funny moments and the singing/dancing is fabulous. I watch it every year in an old theater on Black Friday with my family. And I’ll watch it any other time during the year when I need a little pick-me-up. Love it!

  12. For me, it is “The Muppet Christmas Carol”. I LOVE those singing and dancing puppets since I was a child. Today, I’m 25 years old and I still force my whole family to watch it every year on Christmas Eve (remember: I’m from Germany, we celebrate Christmas with presents and everything else on December, 24th).

  31. We need stronger requirements around what defines a “Christmas movie.” I propose that movies that don’t have a plot that directly tie it to Christmas, but rather simply take place at Christmas time are not Christmas movies.

Home Alone, Love Actually, and Die Hard are movies that take place at Christmas time. They are not Christmas movies.

A movie that had been forgotten until a few years ago is Remember the Night (Preston Sturges script, Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray star). A comedy-drama-romance, the very human story is quite touching, and the two principals have great chemistry, which they would demonstate again a few years later in Double Indemnity.

  55. White Xmas – Practically have it memorized. Love all the dancing. Favorite song/scene – Count Your Blessings. This is something I try to do all year long. As a lover of the classics in almost all forms, I also enjoyed It’s A Wonderful Life, though one viewing was enough for me. Also enjoy Xmas Vacation, in large part due to the fabulous cast, though I will watch any of the the Vacation movies whenever they may come on good old-fashioned TV, with or without commercials. Didn’t get the fuss over Xmas Story after I finally saw it, though I would be interested in seeing if it is improved as a musical.
