101 Books Turns 4!

4 years. 918 posts. 20,000 comments. 32,000 subscribers. More than 1.2 million page views.

When I dreamed up this hair-brained idea back on a whim back in August 2010, I never dreamed 101 Books would become what it is today.

I figured it would take 4 to 5 years to finish all 101 novels—now it’s looking like it will take a little longer than that—but I really had no vision for this, and I surely didn’t expect all the numbers I listed above.

I’ve mentioned it before, but all I really wanted to do was just review the books. Essentially, I figured this blog would just have 101 posts, all reviews, with maybe an extra post here and there.

But I started seeing the opportunity to talk more about the novels, and that coupled with my mild dislike of writing book reviews, was a catalyst for 101 Books turning into 5-post-a-week blog.

So we’re here today and the blog is 4 years old, just a few months younger than my oldest son, and I’m thinking I’ve got another couple of years left until I finished off these final 28 books. It’s kind of crazy.

I’d like to think I would have continued on whether or not the blog became popular, but I can’t say that for sure. Just knowing that you guys are out there reading and taking part in this journey with me is motivational and inspirational.

So thank you.

This last year of my life has been a little hectic. But with my second son close to turning one now, I hope our life will begin to return to some sense of normalcy. And with that, I hope to give a little more time to the blog, especially taking part in the comments.

I try and comment at least once or twice on every post, but I haven’t always been great about that this year. That’s my goal for the upcoming year. Just know that I do read every comment, even if I don’t respond!

I plan to have a book giveaway in September as another way of saying thanks, so be looking out for that.

Thanks again you guys. It’s been a great four years.

  12. A very happy Birtherversary and a happy fatherhood. Glad you stuck it out. I just finished my first year. After I did, my following seemed to pick up momentum. Like you, I wasn’t sure anybody would want to read my posts. Happily people do. Feels good. The thing I have discovered about blogging is the community. Because of my blogging, I have met so many wonderful, and interesting, people. Again thanks for your posts.

  17. Congratulations! Those are some impressive stats and well-deserved. The Lord of the Rings read-along you hosted was great. It was clear from your posts that you loved the books and it made me super excited to re-read them. It used to be very hard for me to get through the trilogy (since high school I have read The Fellowship of the Ring 4 times not because I loved it so much but because the first 3 times I either couldn’t finish it or had no clue what happened in the book). I recently finished re-reading The Hobbit and the trilogy and I can’t believe that I missed so much the first time I read the books. I remember reading The Return of the King the first time around and wanting it to just end. The second time around, I didn’t want the book to end. I have now purchased The Silmarillion and two other books published posthumously by Christopher Tolkien. Tolkien’s essays on Fairy Stories, Beowulf, and the Lay of the Volsungs have also given me a greater appreciation for the myths and legends that inspired the books. In fact, I can now say that I love Tolkien’s works more than the Harry Potter series. The latter was good but the LOTR contained themes that are as relevant today as they were in the 40s when they were written. In the next few weeks I will be posting reflections on the books on my blog. Your posts are educational but never boring because they contain much humor. Keep doing what you’re doing. 🙂
