How Fast Do You Read? Find Out.

Take a break today from all this mindless book banter and have a little fun.

Staples developed a cool little app to test your reading speed. Click on the image below to read a short, timed passage, and answer three simple questions to find out how fast you read.

Thankfully, because my one-year-old taught me so much about reading, I was above the national average. So I guess that’s a good thing. I’m guessing some of you guys are much faster readers than me, seeing how you read like 4 or 5 books at a time.

  1. I had to click on it! I find I am currently 14% lower than the reading average. I am now wondering where the text came from – looks like the excerpt missed the good bit. Thank you for the link.

    • You can expand the excerpt if you click on the cog at the top right of the e-reader. It’s also more accurate with the more text you read.

      • Thank you Robert – much appreciated. It is easier to read when you have an expectation of what is to come next! Never looked at speed of reading before – nice to get a glimpse of a different view on the subject. Thinking about it, its possibly why I have back burner books. Speed (without loss of content) might help. Now it seems I have another way to feel unfit! I look forward to the point where my wife asks what I am doing, and I reply “training”.

Pretty cool … confirmed that I am the slow reader I thought I was but still near average, so I guess that’s not too bad. Fun little exercise! Thanks for sharing

  3. How fun and I too just had to click it. I’m 40% faster than the national average and read 351 words per minute. I also answered all three questions correctly. Thanks for posting this little test.

  4. I’m 11% slower than average. But I noticed that as I was reading, I was too aware that I was being tested, and consequently was too aware of my reading speed. That was a bit of a distraction and slowed me down. I think it also depends on the content. I’m much faster reading a book like Harry Potter, than I am reading a book like Paradise Lost. The results are not surprising, though. I have always felt I was a very slow reader. So I’m pleased to learn it’s only 11%. Interesting test. Thanks for sharing.

I was 67% faster than US national average. I could read more than 450 words per minute. As English is my second language, I am quite proud of the result. The website suggests that I could read War and Peace witgin a day, only if I could maintain the peace. Hardly.

  6. Thanks for that – the results matched about what I expected – 33% above the average. I knew I didn’t read particularly fast – but when I do, I read steadily, so it seems fast.

  8. That was fun! Apparently I’m 24% faster than the national average and it would take me only 31 hours and 34 minutes to read War and Peace. I say ‘only’ because that seems a remarkably short time to finish a book I struggled to get halfway through in a whole thirty-one days!

  9. 27% faster than the national average. I still don’t think I could get through War and Peace in the time that app says I could. Maybe 30 years, but not 30+ hours…

  11. Erm. 161% faster. That can’t be right, though.
I think your speed depends on the text. If it’s something that you can absorb easily, you read faster. There’s no way I’m going to be able to get through The Colour Purple that fast, let alone War and Peace.
    Still, it was fun. 🙂

  12. Can’t resist in saying that I came in at 139% faster than national average (598 words per min). The only hiccup is that seems pretty tame compared to a college professor. Just shows you can never be too thin, too rich, or read too fast…

All I can say is wow. I was always told that I read novels too quickly, but I wasn’t expecting to have the statistic of 906 words per minute and 262 % faster than the national average!

  18. Having the passage be pulled out of the middle of the larger work was a problem for me; I was just trying to orient myself as to what was going on. I remember doing a speed test in high school where we all read the FIRST two pages of a book. That seems like a more accurate means of testing. But maybe I’m just crabby because the test suggested my skills are on par with an “average college student” and I have a master’s degree.

  19. Cool post! So it turns out I am a fast reader, but the first time I skimmed so much that I missed one of the questions 😛
This probably explains why I enjoy re-reading books so much; I probably don’t take in 1/3 of the book the first time.
