Let’s Look At More Terrible Book Covers

If you ever have about 10 minutes (or more) to kill, do yourself a favor and head over to Lousy Book Covers.

If you get a kick out of looking at horrific book covers, then you’ll love this Tumblr, in that train wreck sort of way.

Last year, I posted some samples from the blog, with my commentary on each cover. Because it’s Friday and none of us really want to think very hard, I thought I’d do that again today.

So here are some more recent samples from Lousy Book Covers. For hundreds more, go check out the blog for yourself.

The only thing that came between Mike and Lisa was a BURNING CABIN.

Hey girl, you sure are lookin’ good with that swifter in your back pocket. Uh huh.

This saddens me. I grew up in North Georgia and Christmases in North Georgia looked nothing like this. The Christmas trees were taller and more lively. The curtains, more fashionable. The photos, less pixelated. The text, less neon.

Little Johnny’s remedial Photoshop teacher gave him a C minus.

You know, this actually might be one of the better book covers of all the self-published naturopathic mumbo jumbo I’ve seen. The only thing these people know less about than medicine is Photoshop. Is that Simba?

Presented without comment.

And you wondered why the local pumpkin pie tasted a little gamey this year.

What. To. Look. At. Starting…to…feel…seizure…

The lesson here? Unless you’re a professional designer, never try to create a book cover on your own.

You might think it’s good, but it sucks. It really sucks.

If you care about your book, you’ll save a little money to hire a professional. That way, you’ll rest at night knowing you’ll never be featured on the Lousy Book Covers blog.

  1. My full intent was to pick a favorite, but I can’t. They’re all too funny. I had no idea there was even a website for this. That’s crazy!

  2. Thanks for the laugh!

  3. I needed that laugh this morning! I almost died when I saw “Straight from the Heart”.

    • Yes! That one. I feel so bad for the guy because it’s obviously a sincere story, but that cover…

  4. They say never judge a book by it’s cover, but based on the sampling you just gave us, I’m judging pretty hard. These are atrocious! Haha.

    • I feel sorry for these writers. A good book cover is vital to the sale of their book.

  5. Terrible? I love ‘em!

  6. I really hate it when I see bad covers. And in the self-publishing world, it’s almost like 2 in 3 books have a bad cover. And the sad thing is that if an author made an effort, he/she would find a good illustrator among his friends, friends of friends, etc. Even for free.

    • So true. Self-published authors already have the odds stacked against them, so I just don’t understand how they can’t see the importance of a quality book cover. One of those books could be the next To Kill A Mockingbird (doubtful), but who’s going to read it after seeing that cover?

  7. You showed great restraint in not commenting on “Straight from the Heart.” But my favorite is the swiffer one. For a moment, I thought she had been skewered from the front by a swiffer and it had been on it’s way back out.

    • Too bad she didn’t have a fire hose.

      January 10, 2014
      • :D

        • ;D you started it Jilanne ;D

          January 10, 2014
        • I like the fire one

          • That one reminds me of the optical illusion where, depending on how you focus your eyes, you either see and old woman’s face or the upper half of a young woman’s body.

          • When I read the one covered in pumpkins . . did a double take on it. There is a town not far from here with a similar name. Love that one too ;D

  8. This is perfect to show to my literary magazine kids. Thanks for this. These pictures will do more for their layout designs than anything I could have told them. Awesome.

  9. I am howling this is brilliant it’s made my day :’)

    January 10, 2014
  10. Brilliant! Nothing puts me off a book like a cheap and nasty cover. It’s as if the writer just can’t be bothered with a finished look. I agree with you – if you care about your book, you should care about the cover too! Thanks for giving me a laugh.

  11. Some things are completely out of your control. Fate may decide.

    January 10, 2014
  12. Hahahahahahaa @ Simba!!!

    January 10, 2014
  13. Great food for thought. Unfortunately I’ve seen professionally designed book covers that look like crap too.

  15. These are wonderfully awful.

  16. I really can’t stand the cover for Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy: a trilogy in four parts. You know, the blue and yellow one, containing the entire story?
For some reason, I just can’t stand it. Love the book though.

  17. Could not resist another peek at these Robert
