This passage is Quentin listening to his mom talk snobbishly about Country folk with his thoughts in italics (the lack of punctuation indicates he's paying attention to her face, not her words, hence how he notices she's not even bothering to look at him when she talks to him, a demonstration of how he really doesn't have a real mother, just a shell of a woman called mother). I actually thought that was pretty clear... Faulkner jumps about in time so much that it can be hard to tell when was when, but it is usually pretty easy to tell the voice of one character from another.

I am fascinated by SOC writing. I love the concept; yet, SOC authors like Faulkner and Joyce can be so painful to read. I haven't tried Woolfe yet, but she is on my project list. I think we don't realize how much is going on in our own head at any given moment. If we took the time to record minutes of our own thoughts as they happen we would find these guys were genius in their style of writing.

I haven't read "The Sound and The Fury" but did read "As I Lay Dying" in high school (hated it) and then again about two years later in university (merely disliked it). Since then, I've actually found myself thinking of it on occasion and think I'd really appreciate much more now.

Oddly, the passage you quoted read like my own thoughts (not the content, mind you): I think he has really captured that jumbled quality of absorbing what is going on around one, judging, smelling, moralizing, etc., all in split seconds. In that paragraph, I sensed fear, annoyance, pride, judgement and more.

Will I ever read "The Sounds and The Fury"? Not likely. There are too many more-inviting books I would rather spend my limited free time on!

Faulkner writes like my sister talks, so I find his writing fairly easy to follow. When my sister talks, she speaks so quickly and for so long, I sometimes feel like I need to take a breath for her. Same goes for Faulkner - As long as I know where to "take a breath" as I'm reading, it's all good. If I forget to breathe, things get all foggy and I have to start reading the section over again. I can only take small doses of Faulkner (and my sister) - otherwise, exhaustion kicks in.

I don't mind doing a little digging to understand a story (Infinite Jest is like that) but I'm with you here.

I loved the Fight Club movie but have never read the book. Good suggestion.
