Blog Changes, Announcements, and a 1-Year Anniversary

So next Tuesday, August 30, will mark a year since my first post at 101 Books.

When I started this blog idea, I really had no idea what form it would take. All I really knew was that I wanted to read 101 books and write about them as I read.

I honestly never intended for this to be a daily (every weekday) blog. I thought I would post around once a week, with updates about what I was reading, then review each book after I finished it.

Then the freshly pressed feature came along, then it came along again, and the blog started getting all kinds of traffic and new visitors. So I picked up the pace with the posts–at first, three days a week. And eventually I started posting 5 days a week.

And you know what? It’s fun! I absolutely love writing this blog. When you’re doing what you love, it doesn’t matter that you are sitting in front of a computer at 9:30 at night trying to locate some random quote from Infinite Jest. A few weeks ago, I posted on Twitter, “I’m not sure what’s more fun: Reading or writing about reading.” And it’s true.

Anyway, I’m rambling. I just wanted to thank all of you guys for making this so much fun. I’d be doing this even if you weren’t here every day, but knowing you’re out there, and seeing your comments, makes it even more enjoyable for me. And I hope you guys are having fun with this as well.

On to the housekeeping:

101 Books will look different on Monday. So don’t think you’ve come to the wrong place.  I’m a little tired of this theme–plus, everyone and their brother on WordPress uses this theme. So I stepped it up, purchased a premium theme, and I’ll be using that starting Monday. It’s very similar to this one, just a little fancier. And, in the coming weeks, I might be messing around with adding more images to the blog, so look for that as well.

Friends of 101 Books: I mentioned this a couple of weeks ago. Also on Monday, I’ll add a new page to the top of the menu bar. Friends of 101 Books will highlight the blogs of frequent 101 Books visitors and commenters. Check it out.

Book Giveaway: To celebrate the 1-year anniversary on Tuesday, I’ll be giving away a copy of one of the first 25 books I’ve read on the Time list. Randomly selected winner chooses the book. Shipping is on me as well, even if you live in Budapest. I did this a few months ago, and it went well, so I’ll try it again. Look for that post on Tuesday.

So that’s it. Have a great weekend, friends. Thanks again for hanging around at 101 Books.

Happy almost one-year anniversary, Robert! Hope you’re enjoying re-reading ‘A Clockwork Orange’. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it.

    • Thanks Gemma. Clockwork is a little more disturbing than I remembered it, at least the early chapters.

  4. Congratulations on 101 Books one-year anniversary! It hardly seems possible.
I realize that this is not by any means a race, nor do I mean to add pressure in any way, but at the current rate you would finish the 101 books in just over four years. I am curious as to whether this is what you expected when you began this journey.

    • I was thinking about 5 years, so 4 years would be a little quicker than I expected. But there are several books (Lord of the Rings and Dance to the Music of Time) that are many books in one. So they are going to definitely slow me down. Especially “Dance to the music…”

As I read today, I started to worry that you were pulling back and maybe writing less often–I love reading these posts each day! You’ve given me a reason to like blogs.

    August 26, 2011
    • Thanks, Erik. Blogs aren’t all that bad, especially if they have a focus.

And I’ll be posting every weekday for as long as I can. Don’t plan on changing that.

You are too humble. Focus is not the only key–a good blog needs a good writer, in my opinion. I enjoy your style.

      • Thank you much! I appreciate the compliment.

Happy anniversary, Robert! I’m glad you’re enjoying writing this blog – it shows in every post. Besides checking a couple of food blogs for recipes, yours is the only “themed” blog I read. I like checking up on the books, but I mainly come back because your observations and reviews make a lot of sense to me, like recommendations from a friend. Here’s to another year of great books!

    August 26, 2011
    • Thanks Patti! You are one of the first “regulars” that I noticed commenting on my blog. Thanks for sticking with me!
