The spines on mine tend to get very creased and the pages always attract food stains. But I don't harm the covers - some people bend them all the way back around the book as they are reading. For me that is like nails on a chalk board.

The two books in the worst condition in my house is Paradise Lost (because it took me so long to read, thus it was held open a lot) and Harry Potter: The Prisoner of Azkaban - I spilt a whole glass of water on it, so now its all wavy.

I guess I'm just a messy guy. Plus, I do a lot of my reading at lunch and spills happen. I will agree with you on dog ears, though. Can't do that, ever since I watched Finding Forrester.

Couldn't disagree more - the only books I own that do not look brand new are either second-hand, or returned after loaning by someone who may or may not be now buried under the patio ;) Seriously though - I never dog-ear, I don't write on margins (but do have at least five of those special mini-post-its if I need to mark a page) and I have never felt the need to open a book so dramatically widely that it leaves white lines down the spine - WHY?!?! Maybe I am just too much of a book-lover as just a reading-lover!

Hmmm...I don't know. I love my books and so I try my best to keep them looking good! I read my favorites regularly but they don't look worn...I take all the spills from eats and things on my clothes (which I don't care about half as much!). My Grandpa would cover all his books with brown paper while reading, to protect them!

My books look like they were dragged behind a truck. I always end up cracking the spine on the paper backs. Or dropping them in the tub. Because of this I don't borrow books from anyone. :)

I think your theory applies more to libraries than to people well at least it doesn't apply to me. I like to keep my books looking new and I am the kind of people who reads the same book more than twice. But maybe that is just my obsession with keeping everything looking new. I know! I can't help it. LOL

It's funny. By this measure, you'd never guess my mom has enjoyed any of the books on her bookshelf (and trust me, she has and refuses to part with them even if they someday threaten to take over the house or topple over on her). I don't have ANY IDEA how she can read a paperback cover to cover and not so much as crease the spine at all. Let alone how she manages to keep them looking so pristine after multiple reads. Good thing my sis & I stop by every so often and read thru her library, to help give the books a "lived-in" look! :)

Very true. I prefer hardbacks because they look so much more stately on the shelf. So when I am reading one of them, I try to take better care of it. But a backup copy is a good idea.
